The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde
The Story
Dorian Gray is a young man of incredible beauty. When his friend Basil Hallward paints a portrait of him, Dorian meets the charming but poisonous Lord Henry Wotton. Lord Henry convinces Dorian that youth and beauty are the only things worth having. In a moment of panic, Dorian wishes he could stay young forever and let the portrait bear the marks of his life instead.
Shockingly, his wish comes true. Dorian embarks on a life of selfish pleasure, cruelty, and vice, all while his face remains perfect. But the portrait in his attic changes, growing uglier and more sinister with every bad thing he does. The painting becomes his secret shame and a terrifying record of his soul.
Why You Should Read It
This book is so much more than its spooky premise. Wilde fills it with sharp, witty dialogue (Lord Henry gets all the best lines) that makes you laugh even as the story gets darker. It makes you think hard about what we value. Is beauty really that important? What happens when there are no consequences for your actions? Dorian’s journey is a gripping, slow-motion train wreck. You watch him make terrible choices, and the tension builds as you wonder how it will all end for him and that awful painting.
Final Verdict
Perfect for anyone who loves a gothic story with a philosophical punch. If you enjoy beautiful writing, complex characters, and a plot that makes you question your own morals, this classic is for you. It’s a short book, but it packs a huge emotional and intellectual wallop.
